Cost of Solar Installation in Kenya (2026 Guide)

How Much Does Solar Installation Cost in Kenya in 2026?

Solar energy in Kenya has become more affordable than ever. With electricity costs from Kenya Power rising year after year, thousands of Kenyan homeowners and businesses are switching to solar. But how much does it actually cost to install a solar system in Kenya?

Residential Solar System Costs

For a typical Kenyan home, solar installation costs range from KSh 150,000 to KSh 1,200,000 depending on system size and components:

| System Size | Suitable For | Estimated Cost | |------------|-------------|---------------| | 1kW | Small apartment, basic lighting | KSh 150,000 - 250,000 | | 3kW | Medium home, fridge + TV + lights | KSh 350,000 - 500,000 | | 5kW | Large home, full appliance load | KSh 550,000 - 800,000 | | 10kW | Large home with heavy loads or small business | KSh 900,000 - 1,200,000 |

What's Included in the Cost?

A complete solar installation includes:

• Solar Panels — Typically 40-50% of total cost. We recommend JA Solar bifacial panels for the best efficiency and value.
• Inverter — 20-30% of cost. Hybrid inverters allow grid-tie with battery backup.
• Batteries — 20-30% of cost. Lithium batteries offer the best lifespan and performance.
• Installation & Mounting — 10-15% including labour, cables, breakers, and mounting hardware.

Factors Affecting Solar Installation Price in Kenya

Several factors influence the final cost of your solar installation:

• Location: Installation in Nairobi is typically cheaper due to proximity to suppliers. Rural areas may incur additional transport costs.
• Roof Type: Flat roofs require mounting frames, adding KSh 15,000-30,000. Pitched tin roofs are the easiest and cheapest to install on.
• Battery Capacity: More battery storage = higher cost but more backup hours.
• Brand Quality: Tier-1 brands like JA Solar and Deye cost more upfront but deliver better long-term value.

Return on Investment

A well-designed solar system in Kenya typically pays for itself in 3-5 years through electricity savings. With solar panels warranted for 25 years, that means 20+ years of essentially free electricity.
